Amid the European Day of Foundations and Donors, which is marked on 1. October, the National Foundation for Civil Society Development of Croatia for the first time, in seven Croatian cities (Zagreb, Osijek, Rijeka, Split, Pula, Karlovac and Gospić), will mark the Philanthropy Week, in the period from 24. September to 1. October 2016. The aim of the first week of philanthropy in Croatia is to introduce the wider public to the culture of giving and helping out, and the role and purpose of philanthropy today.
Marking the first Philanthropy Week in Croatia will begin with the round table “Organized philanthropy in Europe and Croatia” – a presentation of the cross-border donations, networking of foundations in Europe and ‘Giving in Europe‘ research, which will be held on Saturday, 24. September, in Hotel Dubrovnik in Zagreb. At this round table, foreign and domestic experts and heads of major donor institutions will discuss key issues of philanthropy today.
Visitors will have the opportunity to hear the experiences of James Magowan, Coordinating Director of DAFNE, Luis Marureira Pires, leader of the Active Citizens program from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Ludwig Forrest, consultant for philanthropy to the King Baudouin Foundation, and Lübbert Classe Hoolwerf, executive director of the European Network for Research on Philanthropy.
The public part of the marking of the first Croatian Philanthropy Week will be held on Saturday, 24. September, at Zrinjevac (from 10-14h.) where foundations gathered in the Croatian Foundations Forum ZaDobroBIT! will present their action, and with music, interactive games, polls, gifts and interviews, promote the concept of philanthropy among citizens and examine their tendency toward philanthropy.
Especially interesting will be an exhibition in the open, “Philanthropy in Croatia”, which will be set up throughout the Saturday, 24 September, in Zrinjevac.
Philanthropy Week will continue with a series of public events in other Croatian cities including philanthropic walks, fairs, exhibitions, concerts, conferences, meetings in the open air, and on 30 September with the opening of Croatian Philanthropic Center in Rijeka.
On the European Day of Foundations and Donors, 1 October, a conference on philanthropy will be held in Pula, which will raise questions about the reasons and motives for philanthropic activity – where self-promotion begins and charity ends, the role of women in philanthropy in the past and today, innovative forms of philanthropy and future of foundations.
“Our wish is to show how to break through the forest of messages and interests, and spread the potentials of empathy, altruism and giving through small steps, because the history teaches us: major changes begin with small steps of a small group of truly engaged individuals,” said the director of the National Foundation for Civil Society Development Cvjetana Plavša-Matić announcing the event.
Organizers of the Philanthropy Week are the National Foundation for Civil Society Development and the European Foundation for Philanthropy and Social Development, with the co-organizers: Regional Foundation for Local Development Zamah from Zagreb, Slagalica – Foundation for Community Development from Osijek, Foundation Kajo Dadić from Split and the Foundation for Fostering Partnership and Development of Civil Society, Pula.
