Children don’t hesitate to tell whether they like something or not, so one definitely should take into consideration the difference between adult media consumers and children. The content we deliver to children should have a high factor of fun because their tolerance to boredom is low. Attractiveness or visual identity are also very important because they encourage children’s curiosity and motivate them to watch content or launch an app.
Simple content management also affects popularity with young audiences. We have to keep in mind that children today grew up with the digital media – many say “with a cell phone in their hand” – and they are really the true voices of the digital age. Also, among preschoolers, and many schoolchildren, you cannot expect that they will read the instructions or try to figure out what the product is about – it has to work immediately. By nature they are curious and want to learn – and they are doing it through everyday play with digital media that offer a wealth of opportunities for that activity.
Understanding the “little bosses”
The panel “Small Bosses – Big Demands” will talk about the experiences of media consumption among children, and the honor of moderating the panel was given to Tim Westcott, Director of Research and Analysis at the IHS Markit Program Department.
“I’m looking forward to coming to NEM for the first time in beautiful Dubrovnik to moderate the panel ‘Small Bosses – Big Demands’. For younger viewers, linear television channels are just a part of their media consumption. I will try to find out how today’s content providers are approaching younger audiences, from excellent panelists, people who are part of a global children’s entertainment channel, a pioneer of the children’s SVOD and one of the key brand channels in the CEE region,” Westcott said. His interlocuters will be: Nicholas Walters, founder of Hopster TV, Daniel Reszka, vice president of youth and new brands for the CEEI region, Viacom, Nickelodeon and Szilvia Mascheka, head of Kids Channel, AMC Networks International.
“Today’s youngest audience is growing up with digital technology, and the innate ability to easily access multiple sources of content. It opens up a multitude of opportunities for content providers, creating an exciting moment to explore our industry,” Reszka added.
Interactive learning through fun
Apps that let kids learn through play are a favorite among parents, but if they create the experience of interactive learning through entertainment, are easy to use and have an engaging design, and at that they don’t burden kids’ eyes with ads – then the product is absolute success. Such an app was developed by NEM panelist Nicholas Walters, director and founder of Hopster, a subscription based app for preschoolers.
“This is a time of massive change in content and the media industry that children are encouraging – their changing habits of media consumption and the way they interact with content. With over one third of children under the age of five who have personal tech, switching from passive linear television to interactive SVOD apps, such as Hopster, has never been greater. I’m excited to talk about this trend with some of the leading entertainment platforms for children in Central and Eastern Europe at the most exciting media event in the region,” Walters said, who will reveal how his platform, full of songs, TV shows, educational games, picture books and learning, has an impact on children.
Szilvia Maschek of AMC Networks International didn’t hide her excitement with the panel in which kids dictate the trends: “How are players in the world of content looking at the different interests of children aged 2 to 12? Is it common ground that SVOD is’ the bomb ‘or is it true that linear television can perfectly coexist?”, asked Maschek, who is responsible for the program and strategy at channels Minimax, Megamax and JimJam, adding that, apart from a wonderful view of Dubrovnik, New Europe Market also provides networking opportunities for all event participants.
