Pinterest has appointed a new chief marketing officer. The platform announced that Claudine Cheever is joining the company in the role, following nearly ten years at Amazon, where she most recently served as VP of global brand and marketing. Cheever succeeds Andréa Mallard, Pinterest’s longtime marketing lead, who earlier this month departed the company to take on a new role at Microsoft.

In outlining her move, Claudine Cheever pointed to what she sees as Pinterest’s key strategic distinction: a platform built around intention rather than reaction. Unlike other social and search environments, Pinterest is positioned as a space people actively visit to plan, save ideas, shape their interests and shop.

That difference, Cheever argues, changes the quality of signals the platform generates. Instead of being driven by impulse or passive consumption, user behaviour on Pinterest is rooted in curiosity and forward-looking intent. For brands, this creates opportunities to connect with people at moments when inspiration is translating into concrete action, making marketing feel more useful and additive rather than disruptive.

Cheever also highlighted the platform’s ability to balance commercial outcomes with a more positive user experience, positioning Pinterest as a place where discovery, decision-making and shopping coexist without the noise typically associated with social media.

Pinterest says the platform now reaches more than 600 million monthly active users, with Gen Z emerging as its fastest-growing audience. In parallel, the company has been accelerating its investment in AI, rolling out new tools such as Pinterest Assistant and updates to its AI-powered board experience.

Before joining Pinterest, Claudine Cheever led several of Amazon’s highest-profile marketing efforts, including five Super Bowl campaigns, and was involved in AI-driven initiatives such as Alexa. Following her departure, Amazon confirmed that Jo Shoesmith, global chief creative officer, will serve as interim marketing lead while a permanent successor is appointed.

Alongside Cheever’s arrival, Pinterest also announced Lee Brown as its new chief business officer, a newly created role. Brown joins from DoorDash, where he most recently served as chief revenue officer, and previously spent six years leading global advertising at Spotify.

Meanwhile, former Pinterest CMO Andréa Mallard confirmed on LinkedIn that she has taken on the role of CMO for Microsoft AI. Pinterest also signalled continued international expansion, noting that markets outside North America currently account for around 25% of its revenue.

Brown, who also shared news of his appointment on LinkedIn, described himself as a longtime Pinterest user, pointing to the platform’s role in supporting personal interests, a perspective that echoes Cheever’s view of Pinterest as fundamentally different from other social media platforms.
