ENTRY DEADLINE FOR 24 GOLDEN DRUM EXPIRES TODAY AT 16:00H
There are only a couple of hours left to enter your works for the Golden Drum, so if you’ve waited for some reason for the last moment, that moment has arrived. The deadline for entries expires today (25 August), at 16.00 hrs.
We’ve already written a lot about the rich program of Golden Drum, which this year brings a number of interesting lectures and workshops that you should not miss. Among those who will share their knowledge and experience with participants this year is Sari Heinilä, CEO of McCann Helsinki, who will present to the audience why “simplicity eats complexity for breakfast” as part of a lecture on building leadership and culture within a creative organization. As Sari says, it’s our industry’s original sin to make everything sound like rocket science, and it should be dedicated to simplicity, because the simpler we can make things the better they’ll click with audiences. However, to be able to make things simple requires a lot more confidence than making things complicated.
Why women are stealing the future of our industry will be explained by Fabian Roser, Managing Director and Executive Creative Director of DDB, Germany. According to Fabian, we are missing out on enormous potential in our leadership positions! For decades our industry has steered public perception, „talk of the town“ topics and political debates, but will we be able to continue this in the future, by handling things the way we used to in the past?
Hurry up and sign up.
AS OF THIS FALL, SMARTPHONE SCREENS WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN
Ever since the first iPhone appeared in 2007, all smartphone screens have been perfectly squared. But things are about to change.
Due to the technical constraints and the need of the manufacturers to differentiate their phones in the flooded and competitive market, some smartphone models to be presented during the upcoming fall will have cutouts on their screens, BusinessInsider writes
For example, the redesigned iPhone model, set to roll out in September, will have such a display. The cutout will divide the notification bar into two parts in order to accommodate the camera on a screen that will extend from edge to edge.
However, Apple will not be the first company to offer such a screen. They’ve been beaten to the punch by Essential PH-1, the first device produced by the company founded and led by maker of the Android operating system, Andy Rubin.
THE #HASHTAG TURNS 10
On August 23, 2007, user Chris Messina used the first hashtag on Twitter, #Barcamp. Today, an average of 125 million hashtags are tweeted per day.
When the hashtag was first conceived on Twitter 10 years ago, brands were merely using it to punctuate content. Today, if a brand creates a hashtag, it is used in all media and formats as an integral part of a comms and marketing strategy.
The most Tweeted hashtag in 2007 was used around 9,000 times. In comparison, the most-used hashtag so far in 2017 was used over 300 million times. And currently, an average of 125 million hashtags are tweeted per day.
The most popular hashtags are #FollowFriday or #FF, which have been tweeted over half a billion times; #NowPlaying, which has been Tweeted more than 1 billion times; #ThrowbackThursday and #TBT, with 120 million tweets.
MACY’S PICKS BBDO AS CREATIVE AGENCY OF RECORD AFTER A REVIEW
Retail giant Macy’s, one of the biggest advertisers in its sector, has chosen BBDO New York as its new creative agency of record after a competitive review.
The news comes as the classic company makes more dramatic changes to counter the challenges stemming from the rise of ecommerce and declining foot traffic in recent years. Earlier this week, Macy’s hired eBay’s North America svp Hal Lawton as president in an effort to better target the digital audience.
According to multiple parties with direct knowledge of the matter, BBDO participated in a closed pitch that included Ogilvy and Publicis to win the business this summer.
According to the latest numbers from Kantar Media, Macy’s spent $681 million on measured media in 2016 and a combined $243 million during the first two quarters of this year. The company’s biggest marketing push precedes the holiday season.
GOOGLE AND WALMART TAKING ON AMAZON IN VOICE-ACTIVATED ECOMMERCE
Google is hoping the world’s biggest brick-and-mortar retailer can give it some much-needed leverage over Amazon.
The company has partnered with Walmart, making it the first time that the retailer has legally sold its goods outside of its own website and stores.
Starting in September, Walmart will supply “hundreds of thousands of items” that can be purchased through Google Assistant and Google Home devices. Similar to Amazon’s Echo, people can speak to the voice-activated devices to buy items from Walmart. People can also shop from the Google Express mobile app and website, which Walmart is plugged into.
Meanwhile, Walmart has aggressively acquired a number of companies to compete with behemoth Amazon. Last year, Walmart bought Jet.com for $3 billion and also owns a handful of ecommerce brands including Bonobos and Modcloth.
