ALL GOOD PROJECTS CONNECTING TOURISM AND DESIGN IN CROATIA ARE EXCLUSIVELY INITIATIVE OF DESIGNERS AND DESIGN ASSOCIATIONS
What is the position of design in Croatia, and how much the state of Croatia uses the potential of Croatian design in promotion of their country? This question of the Tourist news portal was answered by Ira Payer, creative director at Croatia Design Super Store:
“The situation with the design in tourism industry is similar to any other sector: the potential of design is underutilized everywhere. When it comes to public institutions in tourism, whether it is a local or national level, we can perhaps talk of individual positive examples, which, I would say, are at the level of happy incidents. Design is often not present at all. In many cases these are rushed and amateur solutions, and in cases when the need for design is actually recognized, the designer then is not the expert or strategic partner, but rather just the last knob in the chain, selected through public procurement by the criteria of lowest bid, and not competences. It’s a great pity that Croatia doesn’t have a national design strategy as many other countries. With design development policy we would ensure the implementation of design. Promotion of Croatia as a country of good design is actually going in one direction, starting from the design community. All good projects linking tourism and design are result of the exclusive initiative of designers and design associations.”

DELOITTE: MOST COMMON HOLIDAY GIFTS IN EUROPE WERE CHOCOLATES, GIFT CARDS AND BOOKS
Most common gifts for the New Year and Christmas holidays in Europe were chocolates, gift cards and books, even though Europeans would prefer to see cash under their tree (50%) or travel gift cards (46%), according to a survey among 14,065 consumers in 14 European countries conducted by Deloitte.
Books as a gift are the No. 1 choice in France, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Germany, Denmark and Poland, while in the UK, Russia and Slovenia chocolates are leading the list. On the other hand, the Belgians prefer to choose gift vouchers and the Spanish go for footwear and clothing.
Consumers are still worried about economic developments in the future and their own purchasing power, which has a significant impact on holiday spending and so for the holiday season they tried to keep within the purchase budget, and chose less expensive gifts, in stores with lower prices.
WITH ITS FIRST ACQUISITION SINCE 2008, BBDO EXPANDS ITS FOCUS TO FASHION AND LUXURY
BBDO Worldwide made its first foray into the world of high fashion this week by acquiring a majority stake in Wednesday Agency Group, which is the first acquisition of BBDO since 2008. The list of clients of the Wednesday Agency Group, which has headquarters in New York and London, includes well-heeled names such as Tory Burch, H&M, Theory and Net-a-Porter. British GQ recently called founders Jens Grede and Erik Torstensson “two of the most influential men in fashion.” This company currently employs more than 100 staffers working on integrated campaigns, branding, design and content strategy.
With this move, BBDO wants to expand its fashion capabilities, and the President and CEO of BBDO Andrew Robertson said on the occasion: “Fashion is a significant sector of advertising in total. It’s also one that is going through a period of dramatic change. And with change comes opportunity.”
PR GIANTS SET TO CASH IN ON SHELL/BG TAKEOVER DEAL
Brunswick chairman, Sir Alan Parker, and Roland Rudd, the chairman of Finsbury, will be among the financial winners from the £36bn acquisition of BG Group by Royal Dutch Shell. The deal, which has been criticised for being too expensive and not in the interest of shareholders, could see the PR supremos share fees worth up to £10.7m.
Rudd’s Finsbury will receive up to £4.8m for advising Shell and Brunswick, founded by Parker, will receive up to £5.9m for advising BG Group. Sir Martin Sorrell’s son, Mark Sorrell, co-head of UK investment banking at Goldman Sachs is also expected to receive a share of the $175m paid to bankers and financial advisers due to its work with BG Group on the deal.
TWO OF THE MOST-USED APPS AT CES THIS YEAR WERE TINDER AND GRINDR
While the Consumer Electronics Show is all about the latest in tech innovation, even geeks are on the lookout for love connections. Especially geeks, perhaps. This week, Vector Media offered CES attendees free WiFi in exchange for giving the company permission to collect their app usage data and present such stats anonymously in aggregate.
According to collected data, Facebook Messenger—which yesterday we learned now has 800 million monthly users—was the most popular among CES attendees, per Vector.
But what’s most interesting is that even though CES for so many marketers and tech vendors is a work trip, dating app Tinder was five times more popular than workflow app Slack, which was also bested by another match-maker, gay social app Grindr. (Time will tell whether what happens in Vegas truly stays in Vegas.) Below are the Top 10 apps for CES, according to New York-based Vector Media’s findings:
- Facebook Messenger — 74.3%
- Tinder — 61.2%
- Twitter — 56.9%
- Snapchat — 51.8%
- Kik — 38.2%
- Skype — 33.5%
- Tumblr — 20.7%
- LinkedIn — 22.7%
- Grindr — 16.2%
- Slack — 12.8%
