Tasked with communicating tone and content, studios leverage distinct artwork as ads in the physical world and as social media content, all in pursuit of impressions that may equate to ticket sales.
Instagram appears to be the platform of choice for studios to distribute artwork to help their movies stand out in a saturated marketplace.
Here’s some of the most prominent work to appear over the last few weeks.
Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2
Marvel’s Guardian’s of the Galaxy is celebrating a return with some very nostalgic imagery – some paying tribute to the 80s and another making a nod to Star Wars: a New Hope.
It is released 5 May 2017.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Sony has partnered with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (for what may be the last time) to resurrect its Spiderman IP. Note the Avengers Tower in the back of the creative.
It is released 6 July 2017.
Alien: Covenant
20th Century Fox has ramped up the marketing around Alien: Covenant with a nod to the visual mastery of HR Giger. It will hit cinemas 19 May (US) and 12 May (UK)
The Mummy
Universal Pictures is rebooting the Mummy, with Tom Cruise in the lead. The posters are underlining a tonal shift from the original Brendan Fraser franchise.
The movie lands 9 June 2017.
IT Movie
Another remake, this time intent on showing as little of Pennywise the Dancing Clown as possible. Warner Bros and New Line Cinema add a touch of polish to the Tim Curry adaptation of the Stephen King novel.
IT is released 8 September 2017.
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Guy Ritchie’s back with a tale from Albion lore. The marketing puts Sons of Anarchy’s Charlie Hunnam into the midst as the lead, not-yet King, Arthur.
It’s in theaters 19 May 2017.
Thor Ragnorok
The third film in the Thor franchise lands in November as Marvel looks to round off an action packed year.
