More than a decade ago, Seth Godin wrote “Small is the new big”, but this idea became current in our region only now. There are more and more freelancers and entrepreneurs. More and more people are leaving large organizations to be more free, more flexible, more quality and, at the end of the day, happier. There’s an increasing number of those who are small, focused and specialized. And when you’re small, you have to be good.
With this idea, Size – a small creative agency from Zagreb – came to be three years ago, made out from a team of “fleeing” professionals. They fled from large systems to do things in their own way.
Size primarily deals with branding and creative communication, and a powerful digital background has enabled them to create concepts that work in a modern, online environment.
Jurica Koletić, Art Director, says that in Size, they are lucky because they are versatile. They know the online and offline channels equally well, so they can do quality things regardless of the medium.
“With us, size doesn’t matter – we work with small and big alike. The biggest challenge for us is to stay small, because there’s enough work. It’s just a question of what kind. We don’t want mass production. We don’t want a pile of work that we can’t or don’t want to show. We want to stay a small, boutique agency and create visual and verbal communication for brands that can recognize the value of an idea. Because the brand without an idea is just a product,” says Jurica.
Size currently has a staff of four. Jura and Marko are designers. They graduated in architecture in Zagreb – department of visual communication. During and after the studies they worked in the largest Croatian digital agency. There they absorbed web design, but their interest was much wider than the digital channels, so they went their own way. Ivan and Andrej are in charge of verbal communication. They honed their experience both agency and brand side, allowing them to always see the wider picture.
With this approach Size has won several international awards in the field of design this year. Bronze at the International Design Awards for the Freilauf Wine label, and Awwwards – Site Of The Day and SoMo Borac for their agency website.
“Of all the acknowledgments the last one is dearest to us – SoMo Borac for our own web. On that project we were our own client, so we really had fun. We have spent a lot of time creating the video case study, so we could show the importance and value of the creative concept,” says Marko Cvijetić, Creative Director.
With awards, the phone began to ring more, potential clients appeared, and it is even harder for them to stay small.
“At the moment, there are four of us, but a project manager is coming to boost our organization side, and to ensure that our quality doesn’t suffer. In the future, our vision and desire is to gather the top people of our generation who are just like us, but Size will never be a big agency. We want to stay small and grow in quality, not the volume of work. In order to succeed, we must not be afraid to say ‘no’. We reject any work that is not needed at the moment, or does not comply with our vision of the future. We choose clients who are good for us,” says Andrej Virant Sadiković, Creative Director. Andrej adds that they prefer clients who need an agency-partner who will set the brand strategy, rather than those clients who are looking for an agency that will meet all their requirements within a few hours. “If we cannot identify the client’s problem, if we don’t see the creative potential in it, or we think that the solution will be mediocre, we don’t even enter the project. In financial terms, this is the hard way of doing things, but it seems the only right one for us,” Andrej adds.
Here (at least for now) our story about the Size Agency ends.
